There are many reasons you may need a light on at night. Whether you are afraid of the dark or want to keep a light on for the kids, you may need to have a night light in your home. In this guide, I will show you how you can incorporate smart home gadgets into getting a better night sleep or feeling more comfortable in your home at night. A smart home night light is a great way to use the advanced technology of smart lighting in order to provide comfort and security while you sleep.
When I was a child, I always needed to have a light on while I slept. Even now as a full-grown adult, sometimes I need to have a light on for a bit if I wake up from a nightmare. Having lights turn on and off automatically on a schedule or from the sound of my voice would have been very helpful back then. I wouldn’t of had to hear from my parents yell at me all the time that I was “wasting electricity” by leaving my night light on the whole night. The light would stay on all night, even when I was in the deepest sleep possible. Sorry Mom and Dad!
What is a smart home night light?
You may already have a night light that you turn on before going to bed. You might have to reach over to turn it off when you are sleepy, or fall asleep without turning it off, causing you to leave your light on the whole night. Sometimes when you get up during the night, you may stumble as you walk down the dark hallway looking for the light switch. With a smart home night light, you can set a schedule for your specific night light to turn on and off, saving you on those electric bills. With motion sensitivity, your smart light can turn on only when you walk towards or past it. You can also tune the brightness of a light so you can reach maximum comfort and ambiance just before bed and not be blinded by any lights.
You can even connect your smart lights to a voice assistant, such as Amazon Alexa or Google Home, so all you have to do is mutter “Alexa, turn off the lights” and your smart device will turn off your lights just from your voice command. Another great thing about smart lights is that you can set up sensors that can automatically trigger the lights to turn on or off when they sense a door opening or someone walking past.
Now here is a decision to make. You can either go for smart light bulbs that will replace your traditional bulbs, OR you can go for a generic plug in night light that plugs into an electrical socket. I’ll go over a few of my favorite ones below and hopefully make the decision easy for you.
When building out your smart home, smart lights are the easiest to set up. Why not go ahead and take a normal process like turning on and off your lights around bedtime and simply automate it?
Which lights are the best for nighttime?
There are a few different options when it comes to smart night lights. Some you may find beneficial in certain situations that pertain to you, and others you may not. Here are my favorites…
Phillips Hue Starter Kit
If you are looking to replace the traditional light bulbs in your home, then you might want to go with the Philips Hue Starter Kit. The Philips brand is really good about keeping its light bulbs up to date with the latest products and devices.
With the Phillips Hue Starter Kit, you have the option to turn on or off all the lights in one room, or control individual lights in any room. You control this by connecting to the Philips Hue smart app. These lights can come in handy as you can schedule times for your lights to turn on and off at different times in different rooms. If you have a set time that you fall asleep, then you can schedule your lights to turn off at that time, so you know its time for bed.
Connect this starter kit with your Amazon Alexa or Google Home Device and you can use voice assistant to command your lights when to turn on and off. You can even adjust the brightness by simply saying “Dim the lights in the bedroom.”
If you want to mix things up, Philips also sells a variety of smart LEDs such as light strips and colored bulbs. If you like a certain ambiance in your room before bedtime, then you can get light changing bulbs to change the mood of your room.
The Phillips Hue Starter Kit is a great way to set up your smart home for night lighting or any kind of lights in general. Never stumble to the bathroom again in the dark or have to reach over and knock everything off your nightstand to find the switch after a nightmare. Simply use your Phillips smart light bulbs to trigger from the sound of your voice or on a set schedule and you will improve your nighttime experiences tremendously.
Now bear with me on this one. The illumibowl is an awesome toilet night light. Yes, that’s right. I said toilet night light. If you wake up during the night and stumble around through the dark trying to find the toilet, then you may want to invest in this toilet night light. Limit the amount of bright lights you need to turn on during the night just to get to the bathroom. Have your toilet illuminate with light and keep yourself in the sleepiest state possible, so its easier to fall back asleep after doing your business.
You can set your Illumibowl to any single color you want or even have it rotate between colors such as red, orange, green, teal, blue, purple, pink, white, or any other shade. It will make the inside of your toilet bowl glow every time you stumble into the bathroom during the night.
Some features of the Illumibowl include light-sensitivity so it will only turn on in the dark, saving you some money on those electric bills. It is also motion-activated so it will only light up when it senses someone walking into the bathroom.
The illumibowl adjusts to fit any toilet with its adjustable arm technology so that it will never fall off into the toilet. Now we wouldn’t want that to happen, would we?
Since this light works on its own by motion sense and light sensitivity, you won’t need to set it up with any of your other smart devices. Just set it up on your toilet, adjust the color, and you’re good to go!
Leeo Smart Alert Nightlight
This smart night light is a bit different from the others as it offers one feature that might be worth looking into. This light can literally prevent your house from burning down. I’ll explain. The Leeo Smart Alert Nightlight is not only a night light, but is also a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector. Most traditional smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors set off an alarm when they detect something, but this is no use if you are not home to hear it.
With the Leeo Smart Alert Light, you can detect your smoke or CO detector going off and have it send a message to you via the Leeo app on your smartphone or tablet. What is better than having a night light AND something that can also save your life?
This is a traditional plug in the socket light, so all you need to do is plug the Leeo into an electrical socket (make sure to plug it in a hallway near your smoke or carbon-monoxide detector) and connect your Leeo with your WiFi router through the smartphone app. This smart device is equipped with a microphone and sensors for temperature, humidity, and ambient light that will recognize the frequencies and patterns of audio that your smoke and CO detectors generate when the alarms go off. You then will get a notification on your smartphone that the alarms are going off.
The Leeo Nightlight gives you a rainbow of colors to choose from making it the perfect night light to set the ambiance of your home. Set it in your dark hallway so that you don’t have ti stumble through the darkness during the night.
How to set up smart lighting for the night?
Setting up your smart lighting systems are fairly easy. The lights above may vary in set up, but they are all pretty simple to install. If you are setting up your phillip light bulbs, you just need to replace your existing bulbs with the smart bulbs and pair them with the hue or hub that the lights come with. Connect the hub to your WiFi and the Phillips Hue App downloaded on your smartphone and you are good to go. The other lights work by simply just plugging them in and connecting to their relevant apps for full control.
Depending on which light you purchase, its time to set up a light schedule or sensors. You may only need to set it up once and you’re all set, like the illumibowl, but some lights may need adjustments using a smart app on your smartphone or tablet. Set your schedules around the times you fall asleep and wake up so you can get a seamless night’s sleep.
Digging deeper with voice control
I mentioned in the article that you may want to control your smart night light using your voice. This is so beneficial when you are comfy in your covers right before bed, but also need to turn off your lights. With voice control, you won’t even have to get up or reach to your night stand to turn off the light.
Simply hook your device up to your Amazon Alexa or Google Home device and use voice commands to control your lights.
Getting a good night sleep, finally
You can now finally get a good night’s sleep and not have to worry about the lighting in your home. It may seem like such a simple thing, but it goes a long way. Enjoy your great night sleep and don’t forget to leave me a comment below if this article helped you.
